SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

VIRGINIA TIED, NEW JERSEY CLOSING – A new Emerson poll shows the Virginia governorship race tied at 49-49.  Remember, Virginia has been trending Democratic in recent years, and Biden took the state by ten points in 2020.  The fact that a Republican candidate for governor, Glenn Youngkin, can deadlock the race is remarkable in itself.  We're hoping for an upset victory next Tuesday, November 2nd, that will demonstrate just how far the Democratic Party has fallen.

At the same time, the New Jersey governorship race, which had been called an easy win for Democrats by the usual pundits, has tightened considerably.  A month ago incumbent Democratic Governor Phil Murphy had a 13-point lead over little-known Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli.  That lead has been cut to six points.  While Jack is still a long shot, his rapid progress is attracting attention.  The election, as in Virginia, is a week away.   While New Jersey is considered a reliable Democratic state, the fact is that it sometimes elects Republican governors, like Chris Christie.

We can dream of a double upset – Virginia and New Jersey.

INFLATION?  WHAT INFLATION?  – OVERNIGHT:  You mean there's inflation, and people have to work on it, with all the social justice and climate problems we have?  Say it ain't so.    From the Washington Times:

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers’ criticism that the Federal Reserve and other central banks are too focused on “woke” social issues reflects a growing concern that policymakers aren’t paying enough attention to inflation.

The argument from Mr. Summers, a Democrat, also comes as Senate Republicans are trying to prevent congressional Democrats and President Biden from pressuring the Fed to install regional directors who would devote some of their duties to climate change and racial equity. They describe it as a dangerous case of “mission creep” from the central bank’s traditional role of ensuring maximum employment and price stability.

All 12 Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee fired a warning shot this month at the Fed’s regional offices in Boston and Dallas, which are seeking new presidents.

“Several Regional Federal Reserve Banks, including yours, have embraced politically-charged social causes outside of the Federal Reserve’s historical mission and statutory mandate,” the senators wrote to the Boston office. “This mission creep threatens the credibility and independence of the Federal Reserve. The role and purpose of the Regional Federal Reserve Banks is to limit the concentration of power in D.C. and represent the economic interests of their respective regions, not to engage in partisan politics.”

Mr. Summers sounded the alarm earlier this month while speaking to a virtual conference organized by the Institute of International Finance.

“We have a generation of central bankers who are defining themselves by their wokeness,” said Mr. Summers, who is now a professor at Harvard University. “They’re defining themselves by how socially concerned they are. We’re in more danger than we’ve been during my career of losing control of inflation in the U.S.”

He said the problem is even worse in Great Britain and Europe.

Ludovic Subran, the chief economist at the Germany-based insurer and asset manager Allianz SE, said Mr. Summers chose a “media savvy” way of raising concerns about the expanding role of central banks in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial crisis of 2007-08.

COMMENT:  Summers is right.  Wokeness is a folly that can crush the very people it claims to be helping.  Inflation is growing.  Anger about it can change the balance of power in Congress, but by then it may be too late to prevent serious damage to the American family.

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

GOVERNOR RON RIDES AGAIN – OVERNIGHT – FROM THE HILL:   Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said on Sunday that he is looking to enact legislation that will provide a $5,000 bonus to police officers to relocate to Florida, where they can avoid vaccine mandates.   DeSantis told host Maria Bartitomo on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that Florida is “actively working” to recruit law enforcement officers from other states who are being fired for not getting the COVID-19 vaccine.  “We're actually actively working to recruit out-of-state law enforcement, because we do have needs in our police and our sheriff's departments. So, in the next legislative session, I'm going to hopefully sign legislation that gives a $5,000 bonus to any out-of-state law enforcement that relocates in Florida,” DeSantis said.  “So, NYPD, Minneapolis, Seattle, if you're not being treated well, we will treat you better here. You can fill important needs for us, and we will compensate you as a result,” he added.  The governor’s comments come amid his escalating conflict with the Biden administration over its impending vaccine mandate, which will require businesses with 100 or more workers to require vaccines or weekly testing.   Agree with him on every issue or not, DeSantis is the most innovative governor in the country and runs a nonstop office.  He would be an excellent presidential candidate in 2024 if you-know-who decides not to run.

OBAMA GOES WEIRD IN VIRGINIA – OVERNIGHT:  Former President Obama, who, I believe, has decisive influence in the Biden administration, went campaigning in Virginia for Terry McAuliffe, and demonstrated that he's still totally out of touch with America, and still doesn't like its people very much.  From Breitbart:

Former President Barack Obama campaigned for former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Saturday, urging voters to dismiss controversial issues raised by parents of children in public schools.

Parents in Virginia and around the country are furious over a report of a female student who was allegedly raped by a “gender fluid” boy in a in a public school girls’ bathroom in Loudoun County.

They were even more furious after the Loudoun County school system tried to cover up the assault, and prosecute the victim's father for speaking out during a school board meeting. The 14-year-old was arrested in July and charged with two counts of forcible sodomy.

Obama dismissed the recent controversies as “fake outrage,” and “trumped-up culture wars” although he did not specifically refer to the incident. Parents are also deeply upset by efforts to implement critical race theory into the public school curriculum.

“We don’t have time to be wasted on these phony trumped-up culture wars, this fake outrage, the right-wing media’s pedals to juice their ratings,” Obama said.

Republican candidate for governor Glenn Youngkin has focused on the incident as evidence that major reforms are needed in public schools to protect children.

Obama argued that Youngkin was campaigning on the outrage, rather than talking about “serious problems that actually affect serious people.”

“That’s a shame,” he said. “That’s not what this election is about. That’s not what you need Virginia.

COMMENT:  Can you imagine what the response of the woke press would be if a Republican spoke that way about an alleged rape?  Or if a Republican dismissed the concerns of parents as phony or trumped-up?  CNN would have a three-week story.  The New York Times would be too outraged even to publish before its editors got medical attention.

Obama once again proves that he's a party-line wokester, not a liberal.  Too far gone for America.

"The left needs two things to survive. It needs mediocrity, and it needs dependence. It nurtures mediocrity in the public schools and the universities. It nurtures dependence through its empire of government programs. A nation that embraces mediocrity and dependence betrays itself, and can only fade away, wondering all the time what might have been."
